Starting and Further Development
Programmes developed for young horses but suited to all.
Starting
Programmes for all partnerships
With so much for young horses to learn, it is essential they are given the time and support to understand how to regulate their emotions and respond safely. This understanding is developed from the very beginning of their education.
Horses in our programme are encouraged to live in a relaxed, natural environment with herd socialisation where appropriate. We believe this is fundamental to confidence and emotional development, supporting the horse’s ability to learn and process new experiences.
Our approach prioritises a calm, low-stress environment, supporting both mental and physical wellbeing throughout the starting process.
Starting Process
We require a minimum of 8 weeks for all starting horses. Some horses may require additional time depending on their individual progress. Owners are kept updated throughout the entire process.
The starting phase is one of the most influential stages in a horse’s life. Done well, it builds confidence, clarity, and trust. Done poorly, it can create long-term challenges.
At Meraki Equine, we approach this stage with care, patience, and structure. Our goal is to produce horses that are confident, willing, and responsive under saddle, with a strong foundation for future development.
We begin with groundwork to establish communication and understanding, followed by the gradual introduction of tack. Following the mouthing process horses are driven. Ridden work starts in a controlled environment such as the round pen, progressing to ridden life on varied terrain or arena work. Each step is guided by the horse’s mental and physical readiness, ensuring progression is never rushed.
Training Philosophy
We believe in building trust, not forcing compliance.
Each horse is treated as an individual, with effort and willingness recognised and rewarded. Our approach prioritises clarity, consistency, and confidence—never rushing development or asking for more than the horse is ready to give.
This process allows horses to develop into well-rounded, adaptable partners across a wide range of disciplines.
At Meraki Equine, our philosophy is simple: do it once, and do it right.
