Starting and Further Development

Programmes developed for young horses but suited to all.

Programmes for all partnerships.

With so much to learn in our world, it is crucial for horses to understand how to regulate their emotions and respond in a safe manner. We nurture this outcome from the very beginning.

Horses working through our programmes are encouraged to enjoy herd socialisation- optimal conditions for your horses further development and confidence in themselves. Provided is a safe and relaxed environment for all horses focusing on the 3 ‘F’s’: Freedom, Friends and Forage.

Starting

The ‘starting’ period can shape a horse’s future—for better or worse.

Our horse starting program ensures that your horse develops confidence and understanding using Equitation Science principles. We believe in creating a strong foundation by building a clear connection and teaching horses through positive reinforcement. Our approach minimizes stress and maximizes learning, creating horses that are confident and responsive under saddle.

We begin with groundwork to lay the foundation, followed by slowly introducing tack. Your horse begins ridden work in the round pen, moving to the arena and across the farm.

This process is one of the most critical phases in a horse’s life, yet many fail to fully understand or appreciate its impact.

At Meraki Equine we aim to educate and train horses in a way that allows them to reach their full potential, both mentally and physically. We want owners to take pride in their horses, developing well-rounded horses for all disciplines.

We believe in building trust, never abusing a horse’s courage. We reward effort and perseverance, treating each horse as the individual they are—because one size does not fit all.

We work at the pace of each individual horse, awaiting mental and physical readiness before progressing in each phase. It is crucial to realise the importance of taking all necessary time needed for each horse, and be sure not to rush them. Do it once, and do it right!
